Miguel Terekhov’s five decade career began when he joined the Teatro Sodre Ballet Company in his native Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1943 he began touring with Col. W. de Basil s Original Ballet Russe while still in his teens, becoming a soloist two years later. Upon his return to Montevideo he was made principal dancer of the Teatro Sodre Ballet Company. He later joined the Boris Kniaseff Ballet, also as a principal dancer, in Buenos Aires, before becoming a choreographer and leading dancer for a weekly television show,
A Night at the Ballet, in Havana, Cuba. Terekhov joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1954 as a soloist, was quickly promoted to principal dancer and later regisseur of the renowned company.

He accepted an invitation to join the faculty of the University of Oklahoma in 1961 creating a complete curriculum in ballet leading to three degrees, two undergraduate and one graduate. At his suggestion, modem dance was incorporated into the curriculum also leading to a BFA degree. Mr. Terekhov founded Oklahoma Festival Ballet (originally the OU Ballet Company) which has performed since its inception to audience and critical acclaim on campus, around the state, and in several foreign countries. In 1989, Terekhov led Oklahoma Festival Ballet on its first international tour to Mexico and Ecuador.

His choreography includes six full-length and some thirty one-act ballets. They range from the dramatic Romeo and Juliet, Undine, and Bbodas de Sangre to a work based on the comic strip Tumbleweeds, and Les Buf!ons, a spoof of the circus and classical ballet. In addition, Terekhov has restaged ballets from the classical repertoire such as Giselle, Coppelia, Les Sylphides and Petrouchka,.and choreographed more than twenty operas and musicals including Aida, La Traviata, Carmen, Anything Goes, Cabaret, Company, A Little Night Music and Camelot. His full-length Don Quixote was in the professional repertoire of Dallas Ballet and Southern Ballet Theatre, and, in 2000, he returned to Oklahoma Festival Ballet to choreograph The Four Moons, originally staged on four of Americas five Indian Ballerinas.

His performing repertoire included The Firebird, Le Fils Prodigue, Choreartium, Les Presages, Paganini, Prince Igor, Gaiete Parisienne, Giselle, The Mute Wife, Harlequinade and Scheherazade. Among his teachers are Gala Chabelska, Lubov Tchemicheva, Vladimir Dokoudovsky, Boris Kniaseff, Anatole Vilzak, Valentina Pereyaslavic, and Robert Joffrey. Terekhov’s choreography has been performed by such notable dancers as Luis Fuente, Lupe Serrano, Royes Fernandez, Yvonne Chouteau, Marjorie Tallchief,
Rosella Hightower, Fernando Bujones, Toni Lander, and Bruce Marks. Among the choreographers with whom Mr Terekhov has worked are Bronislava Nijinska, Leonide Massine, David Lichine, Boris Kniaseff, Igor Schwezoff and Boris Romanoff. Mr. Terekhov s honors include: Outstanding Educators of America; the University of Oklahoma Regents Award for Superior Teaching; the Standard Oil Award for Outstanding Teaching; and the Oklahoma Governor s Arts Award. He has been invited to teach master classes for Dance Masters of America, the American College Dance Festival, three regional ballet festivals (for which he also served as adjudicator), and numerous college dance programs and regional ballet companies. He has held offices in the Association of American Dance Companies, the Dance Panel of the Oklahoma Arts Council, the conference on Dance in Higher Education, the • American College Dance Festival, and the dance panel of the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute.
